God's Own Tycoons: Kerala Jackpot of Syrian Catholic Business Elite

Updated: Aug 24, 2025

When we think of India’s billionaires, the mind jumps to Gujjus (Ambani & Adani), Marwaris (Birla, Dalmia & Damani), Baniyas (Jindal & Aggarwal) or Parsis (Tata & Wadia).

But there’s another group - quieter, older, and just as formidable that has been building empires of its own: the Syrian Catholic Malayalis.

Their emergence is not new, as their business roots run deep. They have been a part of the state’s social and economic elite for hundreds of years, if not more, shaping industries from tyres to gold loans, electrical appliances to global retail chains.

Kerala’s Syrian Christians trace their faith back nearly two millennia to the arrival of Saint Thomas the Apostle in 2 CE. They were historically landowners, spice traders, and early adapters to Western education under Portuguese and British influence.

Throw in a deep-rooted trade culture and tight-knit community networks, and you’ve got the perfect foundation for business dominance.

It is a fact that when the Portuguese first landed in Kerala in the 15th century, they found Christians among the local elite - Christians who had never even heard of the Pope, whose faith likely predates Christianity in much of Europe.

Meet the Mallu Magnates

Forget the stereotypes of coconut trees and backwaters - these folks play in the big leagues!

  • Verghese Kurien/Amul – Not a billionaire in dollars but in terms of impacting a billion lives as the “Father of the White Revolution” in India. With Gujarat’s cooperative model & support from Tribhuvan Patel, Kurien made India the world’s largest milk producer.

  • V-Guard – Founded by Kochouseph Chittilappilly, now a staple in every Indian home. It started with voltage stabilizers in 1977; now a consumer electricals giant in South India - built slow, steady, and with uncompromising quality control.

Once upon a time, Calicut - now Kozhikode - was the spice capital of the world, luring Arab dhows, Chinese junks, and Portuguese caravels to its shores.

However, the region fell into a deep slumber until the oil boom of the 1970s. Since then, Kerala’s economy has been powered by emigration to the Middle East. The Gulf has become a big chunk of Kerala’s economy today, along with gold - Kerala is India’s biggest consumer of gold.

Keep in mind, there are billionaires from other communities too, like

  • Kalyan Jewellers - T.S. Kalyanaraman, redefining jewellery retail across India and the Middle East

  • LuLu Group - Yusuff Ali, the hypermarket king

  • Aster DM Healthcare - Dr. Azad Moopen, building a healthcare empire across GCC and India

  • RP Group - Dr. Ravi Pillai, with interests from construction to hospitality.

The vision showcased by both the state and the Centre government with Adani’s Vizhinjam International Port in Thiruvananthapuram, poised to become a global transshipment hub, is commendable.

Kerala is once again ready to play on the world’s biggest commercial stage.

For a community that has thrived on trade for centuries, it feels like history just handed them back the keys to their old playground.
